October 20, 2007:  Dr. Ramesh Jain, a distinguished professor, University of California - Irvine gave a very interesting and thought provoking lecture on Indian Technology  in the Flat World.  The gist of the lecture is available with the society.

 

 

August 5, 2007:  Twenty Fourth Annual Mahatma Gandhi Memorial lecture and Awards was held in Qualcomm auditorium.  Ambassador Jeff Davidow, United States Ambassador and President, Institute of the Americas delivered the Mahatma Gandhi memorial lecture.  He emphasized how the concept of non-violence played an important role in bringing contending parties to a dispute together creating an atmosphere in which difficult issues were dealt with to find agreeable solution.

 

Dr. Ramesh Rao Presided and presented  12 Mahatma Gandhi scholars with the assistance of Purvee Parikh.  Dr. P.K. Patel, chair, AVID Scholar committee presented 5 Avid scholars.

 

The Society gave cash awards of $30,000 and the United States Congressional certificates provided by Congressman Bob Filner. 

 

 

March 3, 2007:  Unity in Diversity 2007 was held at the Poway Center for Performing Arts with 16 programs of music and dance drawn from all the regions of India in 14 different languages.  It was directed by Hamid Daudani with the participation of Ramesh Venkatraman, Dr. Sohini Ray, Padmaja Menon, Sharavathi Sathe, Alka Shah, Dr. Anu Rajasekharan, Neha Patel, Dr. Vasanthi Shenoy, Gopa Patnaik, Shalini Chauhan, Suman Nayak, Aashmita Gupta, Divya Devguptapu, Bipin Junnarkar, Neelu Bharadwaj, Shefali Shah, Manjula Jain, Uma Venkatraman, Rohini Rao and others.

 

DR. V.S. Ramchandran, recipient of Padma Bhusan award and world renown Neuroscientist was guest of honor. Mayor Sanders honored Dr. Ramchandran on behalf of the City with San Diego Citation.

 

 

January 17, 2007:  Mayor Jerry Sanders received the ambassador at the City Hall and honored him by presenting the Key to City.

 

In the afternoon, Ambassador Sen addressed the World Affairs Council of San Diego at a luncheon in Tom Ham’s Light House, Harbor Island, followed by a very interesting Q and A period.

 

 

January 16, 2007: Ambassador Sen was interviewed by the Board of Editors of San Diego Union –Tribune and it was published, one full page, on Sunday, the January 27, 2007.

 

The first quarterly lecture of the year was organized in collaboration with the California Institute for Telecommunication and Information Technology and International Relations and Pacific Rim Studies of UCSD in Atkinson Hall when Ambassador Sen spoke on “ United Sates and India Relations: Nuclear Agreement and Beyond”.

 

This lecture followed a lunch at the UCSD Faculty Club hosted by Dr. Mary Anne Fox, Chancellor of UCSD and Dr. Ramesh Rao, Director, California Institute for Telecommunication and Information Technology and attended by a very distinguished group of people, including Dr. Irwin Jacobs and Dr. Atkinson.

 

The Society hosted a very beautiful dinner in honor of Ambassador and Mrs. Sen in Bali Hai restaurant, Shelter Island. Ambassador Sen appreciated very much the contributions that Indian Americans are making to US as well as to India. The food was catered by India Princess.

 

 

January 15, 2007:  Ambassador Sen had very fruitful meetings with very well known scientists of India origin at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography with Dr. V. Ramanathan, Victor Alderson Professor of Atmospheric Sciences; at Cal it2, UCSD with Dr.Ramesh Rao and his associates and at Salk Institute with DR. Inder Verma, Dr. Suresh Subramani, Dr. Shankar Subramaniam, Dr. Vivek Malhotra and other biotechnologists and venture capitalists.

 

Ambassador Sen met senior most officials of Qualcomm and they appraised him of their activities in India.

 

Evening dinner was hosted by Dr. Kim Kamdar of Domain Associates.

 

 

January 14, 2007:  Ambassador Ronen Sen, Ambassador of India to the United States and Mrs. Sen, accompanied by Mr. Pratik Sircar, Deputy Consul General of India in San Francisco visited San Diego at the invitation of the society from January 14 to January 17, 2007.

 

 

January 14, 2007:  Ambassador Sen and Mrs. Sen had dinner with Former Assistant Secretary of State Ambassador Jeff Davidow and Mrs. Davidow.

Harvey C. Fruehauf Professor of Business Administration & Professor of Corporate Strategy and International Business, University of Michigan and world-renowned management consultant.

Gandhi Scholars: Gabriel Beccrra, Christopher Carr, Devina Diggs, Panna Felsen, Jacqueline Gonzales, Katherine Gullota, Melissa Lakensgard, Leela Magavi, Ashwin Mudaliar, Rosa Oceguera, Evelyn Robarts, Ehau Saung, Raquel Sojourner. 

Special Four Year Scholarship Awards: Ishraq Ali, Jesus Tapia

 

Reception honoring the Scholars was hosted by Mukesh and Priya Assomull at Taste of India.

A grant of $15,000 was made to Duke University to pay tuition for an outstanding student from India to study M.B.A. This was made possible by the support received from Arjun and Judy Waney


July 21, 2004

 

21st Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Lecture and Awards held in Sumner Auditorium, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, La Jolla

Gandhi Memorial Lecturer: Dr. V. Ramanathan, Victor Anderson Professor of Atmospheric Sciences and Director, Center for Clouds, Chemistry and Climate, Scripps Institute of Oceanography

Guest of Honor: Dr. Charles Kennel, Vice-Chancellor, U.C.S.D.

Gandhi Scholars: Csilla Felsen, Maruti Kumar Didwania, Christopher Nelson, Marissa Engleman, Dina Amin and Brittany English They were awarded up to $1,000 each and a United States Congressional Certificate from Congressman Bob Filner (Laboni Patnaik presented the scholars)

 

Reception honoring the Scholars, Mr. Thornley and Dr. Ramanathan  was held in Star of India Restaurant, Pacific Beach (Organizer: Kulbir Ghai).

 

To-date, 320 outstanding high schools students have received Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Scholarship awards.

Professor Madhavan, representing the  San Diego City and the Mayor, presented the City Proclamation making June 23 the AAPI Day in San Diego.

Unity in Diversity: Indian Languages and Cultures Program held in Joan Kroc Performing Arts Center.

 

It was inaugurated by Ambassador Lalit Mansingh, followed by a unique program of Indian music, dances and drama in 15 Indian languages (Community members performed, organized by Hamid Daudani, Gopa Patnaik, Vasanthi Shenoy, Sujata Garud, Padmaja Potthil, Anupam Talapatra and others)). San Diego County Office of Education co-sponsored the event. A 40 page booklet (prepared by Amy Kumar) was distributed to the attendees. Over 650 people attended the event and many could not gain admission due to fire code.(Neelu Bhardwaj and friends organized India Expo)

 

Mrs. Mansingh and Consul General Viswanathan were guests of honor.

 

Community Dinner in honor of Ambassador and Mrs. Mansingh  at Ashoka the Great Restaurant. Again overflowing crowd (Organizers: Neelu Bharadwaj, Salim Shah, P.K.Patel and Madhao Saste).
